In 2010, Nokia Research Center demonstrated a concept of indoor positioning system. Now, Nokia has launched an application for this and also released a video for it's promotion.
This system relies on "Positioning Beacons" which just act as satellite for indoor positioning. For outdoor positioning, it works as ordinary positioning systems. Positioning Beacons are placed on ceiling and track how far you are from your destination with accuracy of 30cm.
A special tracking device is also available to track your belongings in case of indoor positioning. It can also track people. It can be useful if you have a naughty child or habit of misplacing things.
Here is promo video...
But unfortunately, there is no announcement from Nokia about it's availability.

Already since 2006 there are suppliers like infsoft (www.infsoft.com) providing indoor positioning and navigation solutions i.e. for airports or trade fairs. The technology is mostly based on WiFi and BLE/iBeacon combined with the sensors of the smartphone. It's great to see that this topic is becoming increasingly significant.
